Samsung Researchers Find a Way to Double Lithium Ion Battery Capacity

Smartphones have come a long way in the past few years, amazing us with new breakthroughs almost every year. Batteries are one of the components that seem to have not improved much. If you want a bigger battery, either you compromise over the price or the size/thickness of the device.
Researchers at Samsung have announced that they have developed a new technology that could help increase lithium ion battery capacity. Batteries have a cathode and an anode (the positive and negative) that age with use and have limitations that restrict battery capacity.
Samsung researchers have been able to produce a silicon cathode material that makes a Graphene coating on a silicon surface which increases the energy density. In simpler words, Samsung has managed to double the capacity of lithium ion batteries which are commonly used in smartphones and other such portable gadgets.

Samsung researchers have doubled capacity by increasing the energy density of batteries using Graphene

The new coating method for the cathodes of the batteries will help overcome the cycling performance and storage limitations forced by the current technology. The new material used is Graphene, which is an excellent conductor and is plastered on top of common silicon coating without the formation of any silicon carbide. The idea is indeed similar to what several other research groups around the world are trying to accomplish using the same material but with a different implementation.
Samsung researchers claim that the new technology will allow a full cell to reach energy densities of 972 Wh/l at first charge cycle and 700 Wh/l at 200th charge cycle when paired with any commercial lithium cobalt oxide cathode. This is around 1.5 to 1.8 times greater than the commercial lithium ion batteries’ original capacity. In other words, this technology increases battery capacity by about two times within the same size.
These types of designs usually reduce battery’s life span as the charge and discharge cycles get increased. The researchers claim that the new tech offer good charge cycle performance. They mention the use of a new multi-layer design to improve the battery’s life span.
Samsung believes that the breakthrough will have big effect on mobile devices as well as the electric car industry as both of these industries direly require better battery technology. As with all new technologies, industry observers expect at least two to three years before the technology enters mass production and goes mainstream.

A Make-over for Karachi:

Once you arrive in Karachi, the walls around you will be painted and chalked with graffiti and quotes in the local language,KalaKari. The street walls of Karachi serve as a sales and promotion channel, where you can advertise whatever your heart desires. Unfortunately, amongst the unique wall art, offensivecomments and political opinions about the Awami invitations to soyems and dharnas taint the image of the city.

There has been a paradigm shift as the students of the Indus Valley School of Arts and Architecture (IVS) along with I AM KARACHI, started a movement to repaint and eradicate the derogatory and unethical materialfrom the city walls. . I AM KARACHI is a citywide campaign initiated by Munawar Ali Syed, with 15 artists and designers. They worked diligently under the scorching sun, scraping scaly paint and kalakarioff the walls. IVS students are working under the supervision of Adeela Suleman (Head of the Fine Arts Department). Students have chosento capitalize ontheir creativity and have selected paintbrushes as their weapon.

Apart from the university students, school children have also volunteered to take part in this project. The programtitled “Bachon se tabdili” havebeautified around 25 wallsin Shirin Jinnah Colony and Lyari and helped in painting some walls at MT Khan Road.University students have aimed to target about 1500 walls of the city. Their beautiful art work can be viewed near Hassan Square, Civic Centre, Saddar, Shahrah-e-Quaideen, MT Khan road, the Airport and Kala Pul.This campaign has successfully decorated 1000 walls, with only 500 left!

(The campaign tries to utilize all the possible forms of art, ranging from stencil work to the famous Truck Art of Karachi.)

Another project named the “Individual Artists Project” focuses mainly on revamping the walls on MT Khan Road and the areas surrounding the Airport.  To our surprise, the students did not have to interact with any extremists, and this project was embraced rather than being shunned. Occasionally, people have yelled at the artists while othersgaze silently in awe. However, it has been observed that people do appreciate them, since the walls have remainedin a spotless and immaculate condition.

Soon You Won’t Need a Facebook Account to Use Messenger

Facebook’s Messenger service on smartphones and tablets has traditionally required you to have an existing Facebook account to use the service. That is set to change in the near-future, with Facebook now allowing you to sign-up for Messenger just with your phone number.
That is a similar method of entering the circle as is employed by Whatsapp, another similar service owned by Facebook.
In the future, when signing up for the first time, you can simply click on “Not on Facebook?” if you don’t already have an existing Facebook account. You can then enter your phone number to sign up for it. Obviously, you’ll still be required to have a name and photo. You can then create your friends list based on the contacts on your phone.

This news means that for the first time, you can use Messenger now even if for some reason you don’t have a Facebook account. The public company still prefers that you go the traditional route as there are “many benefits to using your Facebook credentials”.

Of course, there’s a caveat found here too. The facility is only available in select countries as of present, however, it is expected to roll out in further markets in the coming few months. Until then, if you have use Messenger, create a Facebook account.

Update to Qi Standard Will Triple Wireless Charging Rate

Wireless charging has always seemed among the coolest and most-futuristic idea in the entire tech world. But it has a few caveats, the major one being the issues associated with its speed. While a conventional microUSB port is much more commonplace, it can still blow every wireless charger out of the water with its speed.

That is set to change now, as the Wireless Power Consortium of Qi charging standard has announced a much-needed spike in power in the upcoming update.
With the charging plates of the future, users will be able to transfer power at a rate of up to 15W. As a result with the new standard you’ll be able to charge your phone from nil to 60% in just 30 minutes. That’s just about as fast as it gets in the charging world today.
That’s a substantial step up from the 5W power limit set by current breed of wireless chargers.
Of course, this technology will take some time to reach the hands of the end user but it will mean users won’t have to spend agonizingly lengthy periods of time waiting for their expensive wireless chargers to top off their phone batteries.
Which models and smartphone manufacturers will implement it remains to be seen as well but we hope to see it out there soon since pretty much all the major companies have flirted with the idea for quite long.
